Since 2017, Ruth Montgomery and I have been working with Music of Life to deliver instrumental and classroom tuition to deaf children at Frank Barnes School for Deaf Children in London. The original pilot project was so successful that, last summer, the charity received a grant to expand on this work:
"We are so very grateful to The Mercers’ Company for their recent grant of £75,000 over three years to help us develop and expand our programme of school workshops and individual specialist music lessons in London for Deaf and Disabled children in London.
This week we resume our programme of workshops and lessons at Frank Barnes School in Camden and start the new programme at Gifford Primary school in Ealing, to be followed by more schools in 2020."
The 2019-20 academic year has proved exciting so far; in the autumn term, Music of Life began funding work at both Gifford Primary School in Ealing and Roding Primary School in Redbridge, and in January 2020, Blanche Nevile School for Deaf Children in Highgate. Over 100 deaf children are now receiving musical opportunities and education through the charity.
This year also marks Beethoven's 250th anniversary of birth, meaning many new and exciting opportunities look to be on the horizon for all of our children!
